It's 8:15 AM on Friday before the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon. I missed breakfast from being in such a hurry. I am trying to save my Starbucks budget since it's only the first few days of the month. My prep period would give me enough time to grab McDonald's--yes, I know it's not ideal, but I need something quick. On my way out, I get a text from Kylie, my friend that is running with me, that says, "24 hours!!!! Drink lots of water. Can't wait to do this with you!!! Have a great day!" How can I grab McDonald's after that?
Instead, I went in to Kroger and grabbed a packet of pastrami, a wedge of pepper jack cheese, applesauce, almonds, and a ginormous 101.4 oz container of water that only cost 4¢ more than an individual-size 16oz. bottle of water. I'm really glad that she sent me that little bit of motivation; it was perfect timing and really helped me make a better decision.
I drank most of the water throughout the day, and I'll tell ya, my poor, normally dehydrated body didn't know what to do with it! I had to run to the bathroom after every class.
After school was over, I hurried downtown to the Expo to pick up race packets and see my friend, Lydia, who was working one of the booths. Then I had to rush home to grab Dottie who would stay with Cole overnight so that someone could let her out--I stayed with Kylie downtown so that we would be nearby the race in the morning. We grabbed some Noodles & Co. to load up on carbs and bagels for the morning.
When the race was about to begin, I snuck up to Kylie's corral (she's way faster than me) to start the race off with her. I now know that the assignment of corrals is legit--probably won't be sneaking forward anymore. When our wave of runners began, I told Kylie to go on without me; there was no way that I would keep up and I didn't want to slow her down. She ended up rocking the race in under 2 hours! Very proud of her.
I don't claim to be a "runner"--running is hard for me. The first two miles were the fastest I've run in my life--about 8:35 each--and I usually run a 10-minute mile. Needless to say, I burned out. Apparently I also need to work on getting to the inside corners during the race. Using the Map My Run app, it said I ran 14.1 miles. 14.1! I was 10 minutes over my goal because I ran an entire extra mile. Blast!
Cole brought Dot downtown for the race :) That was extra special. She was very interested in the squirrels. SQUIRREL! We walked toward Chatham Tap, but instead went home to throw some ice on my knees.
Probably the best thing about my mom getting her knees replaced--other than her improving health and mobility--was having her ice machines to use rather than putting ice in baggies and holding them to my legs and knees.
It took about 3 days for me to get back to walking normal. I have only been on walks and bike rides since, but I have already signed up to run the mini again next year. My goal for the summer is to run for at least 20 minutes 4 days a week plus any other exercise that I throw on the schedule.
