One year when I was in college, I lived in a house with an obscene number of people and we all pitched in to have a roommates thanksgiving dinner together. This year, I helped Cole and his roommates do something similar. Thus, I give you Friendsgiving.
On the menu:
Honey-baked ham
Sweet potato casserole
Green beans
Mashed potatoes
Dressing (It's technically only "stuffing" if it was in the bird. I learned that recently)
Mac and Cheese (apparently the boys are unsure of having noodles)
People to feed: 10
We did this dinner on Friday evening so that there could be actual fun and not everyone going to bed early because of work the following day. I made the sweet potato casserole and dressing on Thursday after work. I'm used to having cooked sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top, so the recipe I used was questionable since the yams were blended and no marshmallows were included, but it turned out tasty enough that I will be making them for actual Thanksgiving as well.
I thought that having so many people in the kitchen would be overwhelming with everyone getting in the way of each other, but it could not have gone more smoothly. As I started peeling potatoes, Bob stepped in to help get the job done faster. Adam made a delicious crab dip appetizer during the process. Then as the potatoes were cooking, I put together brown sugar, butter, and garlic together for the green beans, Bob cut the ends off the beans, and Adam cleaned up behind us.
After heating up the sweet potato casserole and dressing, the one thing that we realized is not at their house is a trivet--or three as we needed. We had make-shift trivets of upside-down baking sheets. After having all the sides ready, I started setting the ham into a pan and realized that the one purchased needed to be cooked--I had been told otherwise. Having enough time to cook it turned out fine since some people were running behind.
Appetizers!
Light-up sweater!
Everyone else was still filling their plates
It was a beautiful dinner and group to give thanks with. Afterward, we played Cards Against Humanity. I had never played this before, but it turned out to be very similar to The Game of Things except the responses have already been written, you just choose which one to play in a round. This game will DEFINITELY be accompanying us to the cabins this year! I laughed so hard that I had a stomach cramp. The prompt was "When I pooped, what came out of my butt?" and received responses that included Jafar, Obama, and Oompa Loompas. The fact that those are response cards within the game just killed me! We played that game until 1 AM.
It is so nice to share time with friends. I hope to see many of my other friends over the next several weeks during the holiday season! I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving!
